Sundowns target another South American

Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly closing in on South American midfielder, Matias Esquivel.

According to a renowned journalist Cesar Luis Merio, Sundowns have already reached a verbal agreement with Atletico Lanus to bring Esquivel to South Africa when the transfer window period re-opens next month. The 24-year-old midfielder is expected to sign a four-year deal with the Brazilians, effective January next year.

Esquivel, who is valued at R40 million as per Transfermarket, has played 25 games and scored two goals for Lunas in the Argentinean Premier League this season.

The Brazilians are understood to be preparing to release midfielder Erwin Saavedra to accommodate the signing of Esquivel in January. Saavedra has been struggling with injuries since joining Masandawana from the Bolivian club, Bolivar in February 2022.

"I had a very damaged internal ligament, I had an arthroscopy at the time of the surgery, a part of the meniscus was bad but now I am waiting to finish my recovery," he told Tigo Sports a few months ago.
