Rulani: Fleurs had so much potential

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has termed the passing away of Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs as 'a big loss to South African football'.

Fleurs was shot dead during a hijacking incident in Johannesburg on Wednesday night.

As per the information supplied by the South African Police Service, the young player was shot in the upper body whilst at a petrol station and was certified dead on arrival at a nearby medical facility.

The suspects later drove away with his car, with no arrests made so far since the incident on Wednesday.

Speaking at the CAF Champions League press conference ahead of their second leg of the quarterfinal match against Young Africans, Mokwena said the former Amakhosi defender had so much potential in football.

"It can only befitting to start with words of condolences to Luke's family and, of course, the family of Kaizer Chiefs and the family of SuperSport United as the ones that invested a lot in his development as a footballer," said Mokwena.

"It's very sad that a young life can come to such an abrupt end, with so much potential.

'It's a big loss for the South African football fraternity and as Mamelodi Sundowns, on behalf of the players, technical team and supporters, we want to extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and everybody affected by the loss.

"May his soul rest in peace."
