Sundowns closing in on former Bafana goalkeeper

Mamelodi Sundowns are closing in on securing the services of a retired former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper.

The Chloorkop-based club is expected to decide on former Maritzburg United goalkeeper Shu-Aib Walters in the next 24 hours.

The defending champions want Walters to be the goalkeeper coach for their development sides.

"We still don't know what decision the club will take as they still have to finalize a few things with Walters," an insider informs KickOff.

"But at the moment, as it stands, there is no contract yet. Everything will be confirmed once there is a contract.

"But I know for sure that both parties did have a chat, they want him for their development structures. Remember, his passion at the moment is in development.

"He develops and nurtures goalkeepers. One of his goalkeepers recently got the Engen Goalkeeper of the Tournament in Johannesburg.

"Also, his U15 goalkeeper got the Goalkeeper of the Tournament [award] in the Siphiwe Tshabalala Foundation Tournament.

"Walters is very passionate when it comes to goalkeeping, and that's what has attracted Mamelodi Sundowns to him.

"So, Sundowns did enquire about his availability, but both parties have kept this a secret until something concrete is on the table.

"But everything is expected to take place in 24 hours. What's left now is for our club to give him the contract since they head-hunted him."
