Sundowns earn CAF ‘feathers of respect’

Mamelodi Sundowns will return to the CAF Champions League next season having joined an elite group of clubs that have done double figure consecutive appearances in the competition.

Sundowns will return to the Champions League for the 11th season in a row after adding yet another DStv Premiership title this term.

In the period since the continent's premier club competition moved from the African Cup of Champions Clubs in 1997, Sundowns is now only one of only six clubs that have been into the Champions League at least 10 years in a row.

Al Ahly and Al Hilal have played in the competition for 21 years in a row, having both started their long runs in 2004.

Serial winners Al Ahly are in the final again this year, while the Sudanese are still waiting for their first title.

Congolese heavyweights TP Mazembe have done 18 in a row and will return next year as they lead the Championship round in DR Congo's Ligue 1.

Sudanese club Al Merrikh have done 16 years in a row having started their run in 2009 and through that time their best was when they reached the semi-finals nine years ago.

ASEC Mimosas from Cote d'Ivoire were in the competition 11 years in a row from 2001-2011.

Sundowns' return to the Champions League next season will mean they stretch their consecutive appearances in the continent's premier club competition to 11.

The Brazilians will be in the competition for the 17th time next season since 1997.

They have reached the group stages on 11 occasions, including the year when they were winners in 2016.

Sundowns' points earned in the CAF five-year ranking system have been the reason why South Africa has remained in the top 12 associations eligible to enter two teams in each club competition on the continent.

The Chloorkop-based club has already joined Al Ahly and Esperance in becoming the only clubs to ever win seven league titles in a row in the top five leagues on the continent.
