News of the 24-year-old's transfer has been widely reported in local media, despite Masandawana denying reports of the midfielder's arrival.
Indications are that the two parties have reached an agreement on a four-year deal for the attacker.
Downs currently face a foreign quota headache, and are expected to release midfielder Erwin Saavedra to accommodate Esquivel, who, according to insiders, has had interest in South America, as well as Europe for his services.
An official announcement from Sundowns is expected soon.
