Sundowns’ South American business not done yet

Mamelodi Sundowns' business across the Atlantic Ocean in the next transfer window is not yet done despite having already snapped up Argentine midfielder Junior Mendieta.

Mendieta's move to Sundowns is already wrapped with Stellenbosch having given the greenlight due to financial reasons as they cannot match their maestro has been offered by the DStv Premiership.

The 30-year-old was in fantastic form last season for Stellies with 19 goal contributions (10 goals and nine assists) in 31 appearances.

Mendieta had only scored twice in his first two years in the Cape Winelands after coming in from the Argentine lower divisions but exploded in the 2022/23 campaign.

With Mendieta's deal done a top-ranking Sundowns official responsible for ironing contracts has been spotted in Brazil.

It is believed that he was enroute to another destination in South America.

The first issue at hand relates to Erwin Saavedra who has battled to make an impact at Sundowns in the 18 months that he has spent there.

Injuries have restricted Saavedra from stamping his authority at Sundowns since joining from Bolivar La Paz.

After playing only 165 minutes this past season the option of returning home is being worked on having lost his place in the Bolivia national team.

With his contract at Chloorkop still running options are being considered.

Saavedra was registered as one of four foreign players at Sundowns last season along with Abubeker Nasir Ahmed (Ethiopia), Abdelmounaim Boutouil (Morocco), and Marcelo Allende (Chile) with Gaston Sirino now playing as a local.

Yet another business at hand for Sundowns has been Panama international Ismael Diaz.

Diaz is attached to Universidad Catolica in the Ecuador Liga Pro and featured in the Copa Libertadores (South America's premier club tournament) last year.

The lanky forward's value is within what Sundowns can afford.

Diaz will be on duty for Panama on Wednesday against Canada in the Concacaf Nations League semi-finals.

Should his move to Sundowns come to fruition, Diaz will come in familiar with winning trophies having lifted silverware in Portugal and Panama.

The player's agent, Edgardo Carles, has already confirmed that a solid offer has been placed on the table for Catolica after the player decided against the option of another option at CSKA Moscow in Russia.

Though Sundowns have 10 players who were not born in South Africa, they have foreign space for one player if Saavedra leaves as is expected.
