Downs' 'lazy' star speaks out on Bafana exile

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams has opened up on his return to Bafana Bafana after being dropped by head coach Hugo Broos over discipline issues.

Adams had been dropped from the national team in October after failing to report for camp on the agreed date. .

He then completed a big-money move from Stellenbosch FC to Sundowns in January and became an immediate mainstay at the side, despite initial concerns he would not get much playing time.

The 23-year-old has not missed a single match since his arrival in the capital and was recalled to the Bafana squad for World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin in March.

He went on to mark his return with a goal in each of the qualifiers.

Speaking to media at The Brazilians' training base recently, the midfield man finally opened up on his comeback. 

"It's like I was not out for a while. They welcomed me like I had not been out for a while," said Adams, while also addressing Hugo Broos' comments, where he said the player's exclusion was to teach him a lesson.

"The coach did punish me. I did my punishment. When I got back, I think my performance didn't give him a decision to put me out of the team (again).

"It was an eye-opener for me to do better and to fix my attitude. I did that, and now I am back. Thank God for that," reflected the Cape Town-born lad.

He also spoke candidly on his arrival at the Tshwane giants, a club that had endured a lengthy pursuit for his signature.

"For me, I am a ball player. It wasn't easy to fit into the team. In this team, we like to have the ball and we press.

"Sometimes they say I am lazy, but I know where to be in the spaces. The team has helped me a lot, especially the coach. He has made me a different player."
