JUST IN: Downs star scoops PSL award

The Premier Soccer League has announced the winners of the Coach of the Month and Player of the Month accolades for November/December, with a Mamelodi Sundowns player getting recognition for his efforts in front of goal.

Rayners contributed three important goals for Sundowns in December, scoring the winner in a 1-0 win over his former side Stellenbosch FC and rescuing the Tshwane giants, who were a man down, in the dying minutes with a winning goal against AmaZulu FC.

Prior to that, the bulky striker scored in a 3-0 victory over Sekhukhune United, again in the dying minutes.

Head coach Miguel Cardoso, meanwhile, has been named Coach of the Month for the same period.

Impressively, the Portuguese gaffer scoops the award at his first attempt, having only recently taken over the reins at Chloorkop from Manqoba Mngqithi. His three wins from three outings during this period were enough to impress the judges.

These victories were against Stellenbosch FC, AmaZulu FC and Richards Bay FC respectively - accumulating a vital nine points in the early stages of the season for the defending champions.
