Chiefs to pounce on another Sundowns stalwart?

Kaizer Chiefs could be watching the situation of a Mamelodi Sundowns star with an interested eye, as has been the Soweto giants' tradition with out-of-contract players at Chloorkop in recent years.

Even though Chiefs appeared not to have planned it, it came as no surprise when they signed Gaston Sirino, after his contract lapsed at Sundowns at the end of June 2024.

Amakhosi may also not be able to resist the temptation of having the opportunity to sign Themba Zwane, whose contract is left with only five months.

The cut-throat nature at The Brazilians became evident after they only gave 'Mshishi' a one-year extension at the end of last season, after long negotiations, in spite of the midfielder's legendary status at the club.

Zwane has only been limited to five appearances this season after he ruptured his Achilles on national team team duty in October and was expected to be out for four to six months - which is around April latest.

Judging from comments by head coach Miguel Cardoso on when Zwane is expected to be back, it is not anytime soon.

By the time he returns (if this season), the side would most likely be involved in crucial games in the CAF Champions League, Betway Premiership title race and Nedbank Cup, which could make it difficult for the veteran to be reintegrated this term.

His stats have been slowing down at club level, as is expected given his age, even though he has been able to play around 40 games for the past three campaigns.

The Bafana Bafana international played 42 games in 2021/22, with a contribution of 10 goals and nine assists.

In the 2022/23 campaign, he featured 36 times and scored six goals, with four assists.

Zwane, at 34, also played 41 games last term, though he only scored two goals and had four assists.

The signing of Jayden Adams has been suggested to be a replacement for Zwane.

With Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos still rating the 35-year-old, it would not be a shock for Chiefs to lure the Tembisa-born man to Naturena.

He would be following in the footsteps of the likes of Josta Dladla, Katlego Mphela, Leonardo Castro, Khama Billiat, Ramahlwe Mphahlele, and recently Sirino, who all joined Chiefs from Sundowns as free agents.
