TRANSFER DEADLINE: ‘Time for tough love at Sundowns’

Ethiopian striker Abubeker Nasir's situation at Mamelodi Sundowns has been described as one that calls for some tough love from the club.

Nasir remains under contract at Sundowns despite having it difficult throughout the two years that he has spent reporting to Chloorkop.

The 24-year-old was signed at the beginning of 2022 but was then loaned back to his previous club Ethiopian Coffee for six months.

Upon finally getting to finally become eligible to play, he featured in only 14 games in his first season, then only thrice last term after injuries became his second name, thus forcing the club to de-register him during the January window.

Since then, there has been the subsequent confusion about his release and return, but with confirmation that he remains contracted, the solution is in a loan move as has been suggested by Manqoba Mngqithi.

"It is time for some tough love from Sundowns instead of wrapping him in cotton wool," declares fellow Ethiopian Fikru Tefera, who is familiar with the PSL landscape.

"He has had the opportunity of his life at Sundowns and needed to show the coach how much he wants to play.

"This chance will now go away if he doesn't use it, and he will regret it, so it is important to think about that every day.

"Fine, you say he is injured, but do you think Sundowns is happy with a player taking a foreign spot and being injured for so long?

"He should have worked extra hard to get over this injury and start playing football again instead of enjoying the comforts of being under contract at Sundowns.

"We all agree that he is a good player, but what is the point when you are not playing at your club and not showing the effort to play?

"The money at Sundowns is good, but it should never make you relax because it will come to a point when they let go of you.

"If this is tough love from me to him, then so be it.

"Who will take him on loan if he hasn't been playing for so long?

"The boy is Ethiopian like me and all I want is to see him playing and progressing instead of what is happening, so that is why I'm hurt and speaking like this.

"I will not fault Sundowns if they decide otherwise about him because he is not playing," says an infuriated Tefera.
