Why Downs can't underestimate Ulsan at Club World Cup

After Mamelodi Sundowns found out their opponents at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, KickOff profiles little known Ulsan HD.

The Brazilians have been paired with Borussia Dortmund of Germany and also Brazilian side Fluminense, with Ulsan completing Group F.

Masandawana could be tempted to put all their hopes in targeting maximum points or Ulsan, at face value, appear to be a team in the group that the Tshwane giants can realistically fancy their chances.

The South Korean outfit are one of four teams representing Asia, after they qualified via the rankings path, as they joined Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia, Urawa Red Diamonds from Japan and Al Ain of the United Arab Emirates.

The Tigers are the current champions of South Korea's K League 1 and will be making their third appearance at the Club World Cup.

Ulsan qualified for the previous edition of the Club World Cup twice in 2012 and 2020, which only included winners from seven confederations.

After winning the AFC Champions League, the South Korean side, previously known as Ulsan Hyundai, competed at the 2012 Club World Cup that was held in Japan but they exited without a win, after a 3-1 defeat to Monterrey of Mexico in the quarter-finals and also lost 3-2 to Japanese outfit Sanfrecce Hiroshima in the match for fifth place.

In the 2020 edition of the Club World Cup, which was held in Qatar, the Tigers also bowed out without victory, after a narrow 2-1 defeat to Mexican side Tigres UANL in the second round and were thrashed 3-1 in the match for fifth place by Qatari outfit Al-Duhail.

Sundowns would be familiar with and will look to redeem themselves against a South Korean opposition at the Club World Cup, after they were humiliated 4-1 by Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in the match for fifth place at the 2016 Club World Cup, which was held in Japan.

The Brazilians had started the tournament against hosts Kashima Antlers, who beat them 2-0.

Antlers reached the final before they lost the trophy to Real Madrid after a 4-2 defeat in extra-time.
