'Why Komphela escaped the axe'

Mamelodi Sundowns legend Roger Feutmba has explained why he believes the club's new technical team, led by Miguel Cardoso, agreed to work with Steve Komphela.

Manqoba Mngqithi, assistant coach Romain Folz and goalkeeper coach Wendell Robinson were let go by the club to usher in a new era at Chloorkop.

However, the former Kaizer Chiefs coach will remain part of Cardoso's technical team going forward.

"Komphela, he was allowed to stay behind for a very good reason; they needed a South African amongst the technical team," Feutmba tells KickOff.

"He might serve as an advisor to the new coach to inform him about how things are done here.

"He will share the philosophy or identity of the new stuff.

"It is not something new, it's something that is being done by all foreign coaches. You need someone familiar with the local surroundings.

"In my understanding that is the reason Steve remained. He knows the structure very well; he's been around for some time now."

Feutmba says it would have been unwise for Sundowns to let go of Komphela and keep Mngqithi instead.

"You can't take somebody who's been a head coach and turn him into your new coach's assistant. It wouldn't have worked. It doesn't look good." Feutmba says.

"You can't keep around a coach who is not getting along with some of your players. To have a fresh start you have to let him go. Many factors contributed to his departure."
