Buckley: Maritzburg have chance to rebuild

Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Delron Buckley is backing Maritzburg United to bounce back after the club was recently relegated.

Maritzburg have been relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship after failing to retain the club's status after losing to Cape Town Spurs on the final day of the promotion/ relegation play-offs.

The Team of Choice have already parted ways with several players including coach Fadlu Davids ahead of their life in the lower division next season.

"It's so sad for such a top club to be relegated because I know how the whole club works. I know Farouk, he is nice guy, top guy, when I played there, when I coached there, he treated me very well. If you saw all these years, Maritzburg has been playing relegation year in and out. As I said its painful," said Buckley during the Arminia Bielefeld community outreach program in Kagiso.

"Sometimes in life you need to take two steps back to take 6 steps forward. I think it's something they must think about to rebuild, because you saw the whole season they didn't perform to standards, fight relegation and relegated. Now they have chance to rebuild in the NFD and I am sure they will come back," he added.

Buckley played for Maritzburg United between 2012 and 2014 where he scored three goals in 43 appearances.
