In our feature, How I Became a Goalkeeper, former Bloemfontein Celtic, Maritzburg United, and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Shu-Aib Walters reveals how he ended up as a goalkeeper after starting out as a talented midfielder.
Walters lifted the Telkom Knockout Cup with Cape Town City in the 2016/17 season.
"As an Under-17 player I was playing as a right midfielder, in the Under-19's I was playing as a striker, and I was also playing as a first-team goalkeeper.
"As for how I became a goalkeeper, we were playing the play-offs and I was 15 years old with the senior team.
"They called me and told me I was going to be a goalkeeper in the first match.
"I enjoyed the position, but I never played there until the age of 15 for my club in Wynberg, Cape Town.
"I think I was just a little bit more athletic than the other goalkeeper we had."
Who are some of the goalkeepers you looked up to?
"Peter Schmeichel. He played for the team that I supported.
"I watched Andre Arendse at Cape Town Spurs; who then later went to Fulham.
"I also looked up to Steve Crowley, Mark Anderson, Brian Baloyi, Ronnie Kanalelo and Grant Johnson."
Who are some of the goalkeepers you look up to?
"I like Melusi Buthelezi of TS Galaxy who went to Orlando Pirates now. I think he's got potential, under Tyron Damon the goalkeeper coach at Pirates he can take his goalkeeping to another level.
"Ronwen Williams is exceptional, and he has just proven what they say about goalkeepers. He matures with age. I think we're yet to see the best of Ronwen. He can remain excellent for another five years.
"Abroad, Andre Onana has done exceptionally well, I think he is a well-balanced goalkeeper, he plays very comfortably from the back. He is composed at playing from the back."
