Maritzburg release duo to create foreign spot

Maritzburg United have released Cameroonian goalkeeper Anye Derrick Fru and Zimbabwean centre forward Tawanda Macheke.

According to club chairman Farook Kadodia, the duo was released to open foreign space for new signings Kwame Peprah and Jose Ali Meza.

While Meza joins as a free agent, Peprah joins on a short-term loan deal that will run until the end of the season.

The club has also secured the signature of South African-born centre-back Bradley Cross who failed to impress at Kaizer Chiefs during a trial recently.

Fru joined the Team of Choice at the beginning of the 2022/23 Season from Cameroonian club Coton Sport after he was voted as the Goalkeeper Of The Year.

He made only four league appearances at United but conceded a whopping eight goals, making only one clean sheet in the process.

Former Black Rhinos FC forward Macheke could not score a goal or provide even a single assist in the 12 matches he played this season.

"Look making a decision it's been a challenge, but we had to terminate Fru's contract, and we also terminated Macheke's contract," Kadodia tells KickOff.

"Look we need to have only five foreigners and we only scored four goals the whole season.

"So that's the reason why we had to bring attacking players.

"And as for the goalkeeper, the reality is we have decent goalkeepers here, and if Fru is not going to play as a first-choice keeper, he must open a foreign spot."
