Ayanda Gcaba explains team bus driving incident before his sacking at Royal Eagles

Ayanda Gcaba and Royal Eagles have addressed rumours the ex-Orlando Pirates defender was sacked for driving the team bus.

Gcaba joined the KwaZulu-Natal club in September 2019 but left in January 2020, telling this website he left over issues that were "too personal" to reveal.

Gcaba and Eagles CEO Morgan Mammila are now singing the same tune saying the player was released for insubordination, and not for refusing to drive the team bus as rumours first suggested.

"There is nothing wrong when a player drives a company car," Mammilla tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"He is the one who asked his chairman [Sbu Mpisane] to drive the bus. He was dealing with the chairman directly. Remember I found him there. Do you really think a team can ask a player to drive other players?"

Pressed further on why a professional footballer would ask to drive the team bus, Mammila was also confused.

"I don't know what made him ask the chairman to drive. [He was released for] insubordination to his manager."

Gcaba confirms he drove the team but says he is not exactly sure why he was released for insubordination.

"Maybe I was not what they were looking for. And me driving the bus, I was helping out because the driver was not available at that time," he explains.

"Bathi ngithukile [They claim I swore at] one of the technical team staff, which is not true. I don't need to clear my name because he [Mammila] knows the truth.

"I don't know what he said to you but I was there to play soccer, that's all my man. You can see I left with no fight or what."
