Chairman opens up on Mashikinya, Phiri Jr’s presence at club

Motsepe Foundation Championship side Baroka FC are not done with the transfer market and are still looking to add to their 2024/25 season squad.  

According to sources, the Limpopo club is eyeing more players to add to the squad following their slow start in the current campaign.

KickOff has been informed that Bakgaga have been assessing Given Mashikinya and their former star player Gerald Phiri Jr, with a view to adding them to the side. 

Mashikinya is a well-travelled midfielder whose last club was neighbours Polokwane City. His contract with Rise and Shine finished in July 2024.

Before that, the 33-year-old also turned out for the likes of Sekhukhune United, Maritzburg United, Bloemfontein Celtic, and Mpumalanga Black Aces.

He is now looking for what might be his last professional contract. 

Malawian attacking midfielder Phiri can also play as a second striker and is looking for his second spell with Baroka, after previously signing with the sdide in July 2019. 

The 36-year-old left the club in November 2021 for Sudanese outfit Al Hilal, and has been without a club since he left in July 2023.

According to Baroka chairman Khurishi Mphahlele, the two players will continue training with the club as they will be properly assessed before any decision is taken. 

"Yes, both players are here, they are still being assessed. Phiri arrived here on Sunday," Mphahlele tells KickOff. 

"Are they still the same players? That's why we assessing them. Since they are free agents they can be signed at any time." 

Baroka is currently in seventh position on the log table, with nine points gathered in their six opening matches. The club's next league encounter is set for Durban City at Chatsworth Stadium on September 19.
