PSL star calls time on career after call-up

From being named in the squad for World Cup qualifiers a few days ago, a PSL footballer has decided to call it quits from national duty.

Baroka FC defender Ananias Gebhardt has chosen to stop playing for Namibia ahead of the two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, against Liberia on June 5 and then Tunisia six days later.

Gebhardt was also set to play at the COSAFA Cup but has now decided to hang up his boots on the international scene after 13 years with The Brave Warriors.

The 35-year-old went to two AFCON finals and was in the Namibian squad that famously won the COSAFA Cup in 2015.

He won 105 caps after earning his first in 2011.

"We are over-achievers and I'm extremely proud to be part of the special crop of players who have done so much for the Braves.

"My first call-up was in July 2011, and the journey since then has been nothing short of amazing.

"I feel like now is the right time to make that call, I want to keep the body as healthy as possible.

"I sustained a hamstring [injury] before AFCON and that was most probably the first sign.

"I have already communicated to a few of the players before the AFCON that this will probably be the last time they see me on national duty," Gebhardt told the Namibian FA.

He will continue playing for Baroka, who are involved in a battle to qualify for the promotion play-offs.
