Mbombela United coach Duran Francis reacts to relegation

Francis' side ended the 2019/20 GladAfrica Championship campaign in 14th position with 32 points, clear of nearest rivals TS Sporting on goal difference, but were relegated from the division after being docked 23 points by the PSL Disciplinary Committee.

Tingwenyama's punishment stems from the improper registration of Eswatini international Sabelo Ndzinisa last year and has resulted in the club ultimately ending last on the log standings, thereby being relegated to the ABC Motsepe League.

Club boss Oupa Matsebula previously informed this publication that he would take the matter to court if the decision was upheld, but the PSL have since confirmed that, to date, no appeal has been forthcoming from the Mpumalanga-based side.

Francis, who replaced Simon Ngomane as the club's head coach in December, has now broken his silence on the club's relegation and revealed that he and his players were waiting to hear from Matsebula as to what the way forward will be.

"I've got no idea [about an appeal]. Whatever I know is the stuff I've seen in the media, so we're not sure what's going to happen. It's very up in the air for everybody."

The 42-year-old, who previously enjoyed spells at ABC Motsepe League side PE Stars and as Chippa United's interim boss, added that his own future was up in the air after his contract with Mbombela expired at the end of the 2019/20 season.

"Even on my side, my contract finished now, so I'll wait and see what happens," he revealed.

"I'll wait and see what the next move in my career is because it depends on what's happening or what's not happening with the club, so I'll just take the next week or two off and then we'll see what happens."

Francis also explained that the developments surrounding the club had been tough on his players after they had battled manfully at the end of the season to put themselves in a position to avoid relegation.

"It's difficult when you go through the things the club is going through, you know, fighting relegation and almost surviving on the second last game of the season and thinking you're safe," he said.

"It was hard work [to survive] and there is the disappointment afterwards with the uncertainty that's happening right now."
