The Cane Cutters failed to qualify for PSL promotion/relegation playoffs despite starting the GladAfrica Championship season on a very high note as they looked to gain automatic promotion.
However, after firing head coach Johnny Ferreira, who has since joined Sekhukhune United for next season, the club sank lower down the table and eventually finished sixth.
The club has decided to stick with head coach Pitso Dladla and have appointed Zothwane as his second in command.
Zothwane was an assistant coach to 'Kanu' Vilakazi for Arrows' MultiChoice Diski Challenge team last season.
"We've decided to keep Pitso Dladla as a head coach and he will be assisted by Papi Zothwane," club official Nkosinathi Chili tells snl24.com/kickoff.
"We've given them a season to rebuild this club as we've lost many players. Dladla was given a chance to recommend someone and he chose Zothwane, and we want to give them support."
Chili also reveals their plans for Siyabonga Nomvethe and the future of Siyanda Zwane and Thanduyise Khuboni, who had short -term contracts.
"The coach is still accessing the team but I can't assure you [that anybody will stay]," Chili adds.
"By the looks of things, Zwane and Khuboni will leave us while Nomvethe will remain. The coach feels he can still contribute a lot to the team moving forward both as a player and leader."
