PSL teams distracting Swallows FC players, says Brandon Truter

The Dube Birds have been finding it difficult to close the gap between themselves and table-toppers Ajax Cape Town in recent matches, drawing 0-0 with Uthongathi and losing 3-2 to Pretoria University.

This after a fantastic start to the year as Truter's side went on a winning streak to put themselves in contention for automatic promotion, which is now threatening to slip away.

Leaders Ajax remain seven points clear of second-placed Swallows with six GladAfrica Championship matches remaining.

"Ja, it [PSL players approaching his players] did have an impact hey," Truter tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"When clubs and PSL coaches talk to players or via the agency, it can affect the players' mentality man. It can cause so much problems for a coach to handle when things come up, especially in the last five, six games of the season.

"Definitely there's interest from PSL clubs. Some PSL teams have contacted me and contacted the club directly for players, and even spoke to players directly, which is a bit distracting for the players given the situation that we are in, and given where we can go.

"So for the players to be spoken to directly by any club, it's a bit of a distraction, it's a bit disrespectful to us for where we are going and what we are doing at the moment.

"Players can then have a change of mind if someone guarantees him a job for next season. 'I may not give my all or I'm just going to avoid getting injured.' So that's the issue I'm talking about distracting.

"Yes, there is interest from the PSL for about four to five players I would say, that's the difference. I won't like to mention names now, but there is interest."

Truter says the current break provides clubs with enough time to negotiate player contracts.

"Now is also the time for other clubs to talk to players, time for everybody to start contract negotiations with anybody," the former Richards Bay coach explains.

"So being the last six months of campaign, you can't get away from it. It's either we wait and rest while other people are talking to our players, or we start being proactive.

"But we can do the same to other clubs, talk to people, yes. It's a good opportunity to talk to players for next season."
