SHOCK: Gabuza U-turn at PSL club?

In what will come as a bit of surprising news, indications are that Durban City seem to have made an about-turn on signing Thamsanqa Gabuza.

The former Orlando Pirates striker has been without a club since leaving TS Galaxy in the middle of the last season, due to a lack of regular playing minutes.

Gabuza joined the KwaZulu-Natal-based club during the pre-season in the hope of sealing a deal with them.

This publication had reported that, as per word from sources, a deal had been all but done.

However, as so often happen in football, there seems to have been a sudden change of mind, and it now looks like the 36-year-old will have to continue his search for employment.

It is said the club has, in fact, decided against signing the towering marksman.

While Gabuza and his agent, Mike Makaab, continue to wait for feedback from City, KickOff has been informed by those in the know that the Simo Dladla-led technical team was not impressed during his assessment.

"Though he has experience that might come in handy to any NFD club, the guy lacks fitness and looks off the pace," a source tells this website.

"So, it's very unlikely that he will be signed. He was a good player, but the club feels he is no longer the same. He is not in a good condition for the tough and competitive NFD football. He will need a lot of games to regain his sharpness.

"I believe he has also stopped training with the club," adds the source.

The curtain seems to be drawing on Gabuza's successful football career.

Besides Pirates and Galaxy, 'Ganda-Ganda' has also turned out for Golden Arrows and SuperSport United.

At one stage, he was one of Bafana Bafana's trusted strikers under Ephraim "Shakes" Mashaba.

Durban City, formerly Maritzburg United, will open their 2024/25 Motsepe Foundation Championship season with a home fixture against Casric Stars at Chatsworth Stadium on Friday.
