EXCLUSIVE: PSL play-offs legal drama looming?

The PSL could be faced with a legal drama that threatens the eligibility of a Motsepe Foundation Championship team's qualification for the promotion play-offs, as the case involving Upington City and Milford FC is believed to still be alive.

Last week Thursday, PSL Disciplinary Committee prosecutor Zola Majavu announced that the DC heard the case brought forward by Upington, who allege that Milford did not adhere to the U23 rule after making substitutions in their Motsepe Foundation Championship match.

"I can confirm that the PSL Disciplinary Committee had occasioned to consider the protest which was lodged by Upington City FC against Milford FC," Majavu said in an audio statement.

"The allegation by the protesting club was that Milford had failed to maintain the minimum requirements of Under-23 players at all material times throughout their fixture, in that they had effected substitutions for three players, some of whom were Under-23, resulting in the quota not being met.

"In accordance with the rules of the League, the onus to prosecute the protest rests on the protesting club. I tabled the protest before the DC and left it between the parties to argue about it and hopefully persuade the Disciplinary Committee, one way or the other," Majavu said, before revealing the verdict arrived at.

"In the end, the PSL DC ruled that the protest which was lodged by Upington against Milford was without merit and accordingly dismissed with costs."

However, KickOff.com has gathered information that Upington are in the process of taking the matter to SAFA for Arbitration.

Should a SAFA arbitrator rule in favour of Upington, the PSL promotion-relegation play-offs could be affected, as Bafana Ba Gucci would be awarded a 3-0 result, which would impact the final log standings, particularly for the promotion play-off spots.

Upington finished in seventh place, only three behind third-placed Baroka FC, and should they be awarded three points and three goals, that result, from the courtroom, would take them up to third.

They would be equal on points with Bakgaga but would edge the Limpopo side on goals scored, as their goal difference would also be equal.

Conversely, if Milford are docked three points and three goals, they would survive relegation by the skin of their teeth, as they would be equal on points with NB La Masia, who were relegated in 15th placed, but with a superior goal difference.
