The MTN8 holders conceded three goals on their way to beating Maritzburg United 5-3 last night, but concerns were raised about an uncharacteristically lethargic defensive performance.
The last time Chiefs conceded three goals in domestic football was almost two years ago when SuperSport United beat them 3-1.
“It is going to be a good game, though I have to admit it is not the easiest of draws,” says Fransman, whose Celtic team edged Mamelodi Sundowns on penalties.
“A Chiefs line-up that is capable of scoring five past Maritzburg after being 2-0 down shows that they have some massive fighting spirit and resilience.
“For me we have to go into this game with a certain amount of caution, yet at the same time we have to put one foot in the Final by scoring and putting them on the back foot a bit.”
Chiefs had new-boy Siyanda Xulu twinning with Ivan Bukenya as centre-backs in front of Reyaad Pieterse – a completely new combination to the stable ‘twin towers’ pairing of Tefu Mashamaite and Mulomowandau Mathoho that stood in front of either Itumeleng Khune or Brilliant Khuzwayo for most of last season.
“They have two new players in the heart of their defence who are basically new in Xulu and Bukenya. They conceded three goals which last season you wouldn’t have seen,” Fransman adds.
“I think when it comes to defence, mistakes they do happen, but after that you go to the training grounds to work on those mistakes and try to rectify them as soon as you can. I am not expecting them to leak goals like that again.”
