The former Maritzburg United coach made an emotional return to the club he captained during his playing days.
The move was positively received by most Chiefs supporters and media houses alike as Komphela's appointment meant the big three will all be managed by local coaches next season.

"It's nice [the support], but I'm not one to say feel pity for me. I'm not a pity person," he says.
"You know this thing of people assuming responsibilities and wanting the world to feel sorry for them, that's not for me. This is a new environment, I'm a professional coach and I must be viewed as such.
"There must not be a situation where the media feels I can't write this. We're all doing our jobs here and if there's a need where you have to write and advise me on some of the decisions [I make] you're free to do that.

“When you have to compliment you shall do that and not looking at who you're complimenting and when you condemn likewise, so I’m comfortable and it comes with the territory.
"If you pray for rain the expect mud and if you seriously pray for rain then carry an umbrella because it will surely rain."
Although Komphela guided Maritzburg to their first top eight finish in the PSL last season, the 48-year-old reveals that he's sometimes met with skepticism.
"You know what surprises me is that when you get to a filling station and an attendant asks you, hey man will you make it? Or you go to a restaurant and the person serving you again asks the same question.
"If you're a person who can't respond or becomes emotional you'll end up doubting yourself because of the number of questions, but I'm comfortable with it.
“If I'm not comfortable now then why did I get into it? I got into it knowing well this is serious stuff and I'm ready for it [challenge]."
