Senzo Meyiwa wants Orlando Pirates to win Derby in his hometown

The Soweto Giants have played nine Cup games in Durban since their first meeting in this coastal city at Curries Fountain in 1972 with The Bucs winning just once in the 1976 Sales House Champion of Champions final first-leg in KwaMashu when Alfred Mgedeza’s goal separated the two sides.

The country’s flagship football fixture is back where Meyiwa was born and he feels not only does he need to do it for The Ghost but also wants to see smiles on the faces of his family who will be part of the crowd in the stands at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Meyiwa is convinced he can achieve his first victory over their rivals in his hometown after finding no joy on the three previous occasions that he has travelled back home with the Pirates squad for this fixture.

“The coach always tells us that in life you need to break history,” chuckles Meyiwa.

“People have been saying Nigeria this and Bafana Bafana this. There is always someone who needs to change things so I think it is our turn to change those things that happened before and I believe this is the 90 minutes for changing all those doubts from the people.

“I am playing at home and the family will be there to watch me so I must do my best to make them happy,” he says.

The Pirates number one also notes that this particular derby has all the ingredients of providing a contest that is worth all the hype that this fixture always creates.

“I think because of the momentum that both teams have this is going to be an open game. However, it is up to the coach how to approach it in that should we go at them or stay and wait for them to come at us. I don’t know what the coach will say on the day.

“I know that they (Chiefs) have the confidence but the derby is a different ball game. They are obviously worried about us because of the performance of Kermit (Erasmus) and Majoro (Lehlohonolo) who have been doing very well,” says Meyiwa.
