Steve Komphela feels well-prepared ahead of Maritzburg United tussle

The PSL champions take on the Kwa Zulu-Natal-based side in their MTN8 quarter-final match-up at FNB Stadium, as Komphela prepares for his first official match at the helm of Amakhosi against his former team.

"A leopard doesn’t change its spots," Komphela was quoted as saying in the press conference ahead of the midweek fixture. "We have to do our homework. I know them in and out. The beauty of it is that I'm the only new inclusion here. They have a challenge too; they have changed the coach and players.

"We have only top teams in the MTN8 and I'm facing my former employer and Mandla Ncikazi is a good coach. We are preparing accordingly,” he added.

Chiefs are the holders of the MTN8 trophy after beating Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates in last year’s Final, and Komphela says the Glamour Boys are eager to retain their title.

"The desire to win the MTN8 is there, we are hungry," he said. "We want to defend the Cup. The players have tasted victory before want to do it again.

"We are all in it,” he continues. "We have a strong squad of humble and dedicated players. We aren't focusing on negatives. We want to win the match."

Despite their Carling Black Label Cup defeat to Pirates, Komphela says he feels well-prepared after a good pre-season, insisting he is not stressed as he relishes the start of the new campaign.

"I'm privileged to have enough time to settle," he said. "I'm fairly comfortable."

"Pre-season matches have given me a chance to get feedback to work on. I don't have much stress. We are waiting for Wednesday night.”
