Lidoda Duvha, who memorably made the final of the 2011 edition, were up against National First Division rivals Super Eagles at Goble Park for a spot in the Last 32 of next year’s competition, yet were undone 3-0 by the hosts, ending a four-match unbeaten run as they dropped out of the tournament.
Leopards had beaten Eagles 2-1 in their league match-up just last month, yet Eagles got their revenge, Thapelo Selepe scoring on either side of the break, before Thabo Setsumi’s 89th-minute strike put the icing on the cake as the minnows advanced to the next round.
In the day’s other fixture at Parow Park, hosts Stellenbosch were too good for Mbombela United, securing a 3-0 win to progress to the Last 32.
The duo met just three days before, playing out a 0-0 draw in the league, yet the Cape club upped the tempo in their knockout decider, with Carl Lark opening the scoring just six minutes in.
Two second-half goals, scored just three minutes apart, by Malesela Monene and Broderick Burds secured the victory for Stellenbosch, who will look to emulate the run of Vasco da Gama – the club’s previous name – who made it to the semi-finals two years ago.
Six other Nedbank Cup qualifying fixtures are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, with 12 NFD teams battling it out for the last six spots in the Last 32:
Jomo Cosmos vs Ubuntu CT (Vosloorus Stadium)
Witbank Spurs vs Richards Bay (Puma Rugby Stadium)
CT All Stars vs Tshakhuma (Parow Park)
Mthatha Bucks vs Uthongathi (Mthatha Stadium)
Royal Eagles vs University of Pretoria (Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium)
Highlands Park vs Real Kings (Makhulong Stadium)
Kick-off for all fixtures is set for 15h00.
