The Citizens were sent packing after a 2-1 loss to Mozambican outfit Costa Do Sol in their first round, second leg tie at Athlone Stadium on Sunday.
Benni McCarthy’s troops went into the second leg after winning the first encounter 1-0, but they ended up getting knocked out in a game where tempers flared.
The home side somehow choked in front of their home fans.
The 32-year-old Johannes has made no secret about being disappointed with the exit, in what was their first appearance in the Confederation Cup.
“The first leg we played them off the park in their own back yard.
“They came here, dug deep and wanted it more, so credit to them for their efforts,” said the experienced defender who’ll be joining Bidvest Wits next season.
Johannes says a lot now rests on the Nedbank Cup as it’s the last trophy on offer for the Citizens.
City will face Mamelodi Sundowns in the quarterfinals, a side they have beaten three times in four matches. The Citizens would love to play the final in front of their fans at Cape Town Stadium, so there's motivation to go all the way.
“When we play Sundowns it’s always fireworks and this game won’t be any different.
“We talking about the best team on the continent.
“There’s also no better motivation than the final being in Cape Town. We need to be up for it and bring our A-game,” the City captain concluded.
