Chippa United coach Teboho Moloi says you must be prepared for lower league opposition

Chippa will visit the ABC Motsepe League side at Mpumalanga's Kabokweni Stadium, the same venue where Acornbush United hosted Kaizer Chiefs in the first round of the competition last season.

Phiva frustrated NFD outfit Jomo Cosmos at the same stage of the tournament in 2015, eventually going down 2-1 after extra time.

Jackie Ledwaba’s side also enter the match with confidence as they are unbeaten in 15 league games, which includes 12 wins.

The Chilli Boys, meanwhile, will need no reminding of their 2015 exit from the event at the hands of Natal United FC, or their first round defeat to Baroka the following season.

Moloi, who won this cup as an assistant coach of Orlando Pirates in 2014, is wary of being on the wrong end of an upset

“My analyst has been out there, we have an idea about them. But honestly speaking you can have an idea about teams from the ABC Motsepe League but if you are not prepared they’ll shock you,” said Moloi.

“This is a cup of surprises where you find that smaller teams raise their hand and come out guns blazing. They know that they have nothing to lose and they’ll come at us.

“You know I have an experience of being knocked out previously by teams that play in the lower divisions.

“If you remember when we [Pirates] went all the way in the Nedbank Cup we played Thanda Zulu Royal and they went as far as taking us to a penalty shoot-out.

“So we’ll go out there and show them that we understand what they are capable off, but go out with the mentality of coming back with the result, because if we are going to defend the way we defended against Platinum Stars we’ll get the shock of our lives.”

Moloi, who spent most of his playing and coaching days at Bucs, pointed out how the club was stunned by Maluti FET in 2013, as well as when Zola Young Stars defeated Pirates 5-3 in 1991 in the Bobsave Super Bowl after the game finished 3-3.

With that in mind he remains on high alert.

“No, this time I’m at Chippa United. As I’ve said, this cup is the cup of surprises and you have seen it many times,” he added.

“Even our days when it was the Mainstay Cup, clubs from the lower divisions, they can disturb you .... you can name Maluti with Pirates, Zola Young Stars with Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs against University of Pretoria where Jimmy Tau said he heard the impempe [whistle in 2009], Baroka with Chiefs. So there are so many examples.

“Even with me during the Mainstay Cup, Bobsave Super Bowl ... when these small clubs meet PSL teams they tend to raise their game because they are looking for contracts from PSL teams.

“So we have to go there prepared to fight and fight clever because otherwise we going to get surprised.”

Kick-off is at 15h30.
