Chiefs have another opportunity of lifting silverware this season, beginning their Nedbank Cup journey against Absa Premiership rivals Golden Arrows at the FNB Stadium on Sunday.
The Amakhosi last lifted a trophy back in the 2014/15 season, when former coach Stuart Baxter guided the team to the MTN8 crown in September 2014, before securing their fourth league championship in the PSL era in May 2015.
Mathoho has stressed the need to claim this cup to put an end to their barren run, which is currently at 1373 days, but admits it won’t be an easy task against Abafana Bes’thende.
“Cup games are different. Unlike a league match, only one team progresses to the next round – you win or you go out,” Mathoho is quoted as saying on his club’s website.
“We haven’t won a cup in nearly three years. So this has to be ours. There is, however, still a long road to go and we have to treat each game as a final.
“It won’t be an easy game against Arrows. They are a hard team to beat, which means that we will need to come out fighting.”
He added: “Without the supporters we are nothing. The Nedbank Cup is a step-by-step journey towards the final. I hope that our supporters will join us on this exciting journey.”
