Manqoba Mngqithi rues first half performance from Mamelodi Sundowns

Sundowns came from a goal down to win 2-1 against the third-tier side in the last-16 tie at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday night.

“To be honest, there is not much I said. First half, it should’ve been a different story. We made a stupid mistake and got punished dearly. From there, we created good chances to take the lead," Mngqithi told SuperSport TV.

“No wonder the goalkeeper is the man of the match because he kept them in the game. It’s always scary when a small team leads during that time because now we start thinking if we go all out they are going to catch us on a counterattack and their striker (Joseph) Chikili is very good.

“But we knew with time they will tire and give us the game. Honestly speaking like I said before, it’s a very good team."

After conceding the opener earlier in the first half, Mngqithi made a change that caught many by surprise as Thapelo Morena replaced Anele Ngcongca; he explains all his substitutes.

“We just felt after scoring the second, we needed someone more mobile that’s why we brought on Keletso (Makgalwa).

“The first one of Anele was a forced one because of a groin injury. We then brought on Gaston to try and lift the team with more mobility in midfield,” he said.
