Maritzburg United to do battle against Swallows FC without four key players

Deolin Mekoa, Bevan Fransman, Bandile Shandu and Siphesihle Ndlovu will miss Saturday's trip to Dobsonville Stadium after each earning a fourth booking in the recent 2-1 league loss to Orlando Pirates at Orlando Stadium.

Davids will have to draw from the club's reserve side as the Team of Choice aim to better reaching the semi-finals of the event in 2014 where they lost to eventual champions Pirates.

“Of course this is an opportunity to get to the next round. We are not taking Swallows lightly, we are taking it as a normal game. We are not resting players,” Davids said.

“Before the Pirates game we had six players on three yellow cards and we knew it’d come. Unluckily we got four out and yes we don’t have a big squad, which is 24 players including our MultiChoice Diski team.

“We have to look into the Diski lineup for four positions that have to be filled, but we believe in all of them. I can assure you they can play at any moment and that is why we have small squad, to be able to call upon any of the younger players that are coming through.

“I have no fear in throwing them in. I have no fear in playing them no matter what age and if they are ready they’ll play.

“We are going out with a full-strength squad and we want to get to the next round. The most important thing is to get the victory and use it as preparation for the upcoming games.”

Davids was mandated by club chairman Farook Kadodia to secure a top-four finish and reach a cup final when he signed a two-year deal with an option to renew in the off-season.

He feels it is important to aim high.

“You have to have ambition as a coach and the players themselves. Earlier this season we missed out on the MTN8 to SuperSport after being so close,” he added.

“We shouldn’t think too far though about the final, all our focus is now on Swallows. We have seen it before, these lower leagues teams kick out big teams and we are by far the big team. We cannot be complacent and take them lightly.

“We are going to take it like any PSL match. We are going to take it as a match of high standards where we are going prepared like we normally do with tactics, video, everything, with the footage we have.

“So we won’t take them lightly. We’ll try attack but we know it won’t be easy. But the first step is to go to the last-16.”

Kick-off is at 15h30.
