Nedbank Cup Last 16 match report Mamelodi Sundowns v Mathaithai FC 08 March 2022

Mamelodi Sundowns showed no mercy to Mathaithai FC with a 6-0 thumping in the Nedbank Cup last 16 on Tuesday evening.

Sundowns set out differently from their loss to Maritzburg United, with the likes of Reyaad Pieterse, Aubrey Modiba, Themba Zwane, Mothobi Mvala, Surprise Ralani, Neo Maema and Thabiso Kutumela earning recalls.

It took the Brazilians just a minute from the start to get the ball rolling and surged ahead when a rebounded effort in the area fell kindly to Ralani, who made no mistake from close rnage.

It looked as if it was going to be long evening for the ABC Motsepe League outfit as Zwane moved through to the attacking area to find the net from inside the area a minute later.

Masandawana, however, were sadly not able to add on the fast start minutes thereafter despite chances falling to Ralani and Kutumela, as the visitors refused to throw in the towel.

Sundowns wasted another good chance ten minutes to halftime when a cutback left of the area by Kutumela saw Neo Maema charged and fired over from inside the six-yard area.

The second half saw Masandawana maintain their dominance, with Brian Onyango coming in for Sphelele Mkhulise, Kermit Erasmus in for Zwane and Rushine De Reuck withdrawn for Sibusiso Vilakazi.

Sundowns made it three in the 66th minute when Kutumela pounced on a goal-mouth scramble in the area and bundled in a loose ball as Mathaithai failed to clear their lines.

There were more fresh faces from the bench by Masandawana minutes later, with Lebohang Maboe back from a lengthy injury lay-off along with Andile Jali.

The Brazilians bagged a fourth goal towards the last ten minutes after Kutumela rounded goalkeeper Mbali Tshabalala from Maboe's through pass to go clear and fired into an empty net.

Sundowns weren't done and made it five in the final six minutes when Maboe pounced on a three-on-two attack to lob an on-rushing Tshabalala from close-range.

Masandawana collected a sixth with two minutes remaining after a speculative shot outside the area from Jali wrong-footed Tshabalala before nestling into the net, as the hosts advanced to the last eight.
