Nedbank Cup Last 16 match report Marumo Gallants v Orlando Pirates 09 March 2022

Holders Marumo Gallants sent Orlando Pirates crashing out of the Nedbank Cup after a penalty shoot-out victory on Wednesday night.

Pirates handed recalls to Richard Ofori, Happy Jele, Goodman Mosele and Zakhele Lepasa after the Soweto derby loss, while Gallants made just one change in Isaac Nhlapo.

With the derby defeat still fresh in their minds, Pirates missed a big chance ten minutes in when Lepasa miscued a low cross left of the attacking area following a clever run.

Pirates were on the edge on 20 minutes and conceded a penalty when Jele fouled Joseph Molangoane and witnessed Ndlondlo beat the outstretched arm of Ofori from 12 yards out.

Nine minutes though were all it took the Buccaneers to level as a blind run right of the area from Bandile Shandu led to a cool finish past a diving Marumo goalkeeper King Ndlovu.

Soon thereafter, two substitutions from Gallants followed, with Tshepo Gumede coming in for Ayanda Nkili and Edgar Manaka entered for Mpho Mvelase.

Pirates looked for a quick start minutes into the second half and had a free-kick from Deon Hotto crack the upright before Kwame Peprah fluffed the follow-up.

The Buccaneers didn't stop issuing threats just over 60 minutes played and had a glancing header from Kabelo Dlamini shaved agonizingly wide.

Marumo continued to hang on tight moments thereafter, but the better chances remained with the Buccaneers as Thembinkosi Lorch worked Ndlovu from a shot outside the area just after entering.

With that, the match became an even contest this after Marumo troubled the Buccaneers through balls on the near side of the area but the visitors managed and entered a period of extra-time.

Neither side could find a winner and the game would be settled by the dreaded shoot-out, where Gallants held their nerve to triumph and booked their spot in the last eight.
