Royal AM defeated Cape Town City on penalties to secure their spot in the next round of the Nedbank Cup on Sunday evening.
City coach Eric Tinkler handed starts to goalkeeper Bongani Mpandle, Katlego Mokhuoane and Keanu Cupido after the loss to SuperSport United, while Motebang Sera spear-headed the visitors' front-line.
It didn't take the home side long to launch a shot on target after Mduduzi Mdantsane worked himself out of a scramble in the area and fired in a low shot that needed two stops from goalkeeper Hugo Nyame.
Following the dominant opening by City, the visitors came alive inside 20 minutes and almost broke through with an angled shot from a tight area by Thabo Matlaba but he had his effort cleared.
Royal AM pushed forward again and were inches away from the breakthrough after a curling drive in the area by Sera following a layoff hit the upright before it bounced back into play.
City lived dangerously just after halftime and needed a one-handed stop from Mpandle to thwart Tebogo Potsane's close-range effort following a pin-point cross from a curling corner-kick.
Though, the Citizens started to have the lion share of chances following the closing quarter and had the visitors camped inside their own half for the duration of the match.
With the frustration in front of goal continuing, Tinkler added fresh faces off the bench in Taahir Goedeman for Mokhuoane and Kajally Drammeh ahead of Jaedin Rhodes.
The host should've secured the winner in added time with a clear strike by Goedeman from a ball over the top, but Nyame saved and took matters to extra-time.
City still enjoyed a host of openings in extra-time and had Juan Zapata's teasing shot inside the box from a tight angle come off the upright and rolled back into play.
The Citizens kept coming in the second period of extra-time and a well-drilled effort from Khanyisa Mayo found the upright, which ultimately sent the game to penalties.
Mayo didn't cover himself in glory in the shoot-out as his spot-kick was saved by Nyame along with Lorenzo Gordinho, as Royal AM advanced to the round of 16.
