Chippa brush minnows aside in Nedbank Cup

Chippa United booked a spot in the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup with a 2-0 win over Mpheni Home Defenders on Saturday afternoon.

Chippa handed Janovane September his first appearance of the campaign and re-called Brooklyn Poggenpoel from their loss at the hands of AmaZulu the past Sunday.

It was a buoyant opening for the visiting team after Lwazi Mfeek charged in on goal to get a shot away, but a timeous block at the back by Roscoe Pietersen kept him out.

Chippa came in their own a few minutes later and had Ronald Pfumbidzai shoot over target through an overhead attempt that hit the roof of the net.

The Chilli Boys showed their quality right after the closing phase of the first half and broke the deadlock when the self-same Pfumbidzai applied a smart near post finish.

Home Defenders were under more pressure shortly from going behind, but Sirgio Kammies wasn't able to pounce and instead directed a smart opening wide of target.

Chippa were close again before the halftime interval and watched Etiosa Ighodaro collect a layoff from Pfumbidzai only to fire in the side-netting.

There were very few openings between the two during the earlier exchanges of the second half with the host in particular eager to maintain their advantage.

A double alteration were installed by the host a little from the resumption with Diego Appollis introduced for Ighodaro before Trevor Mathiane replaced Kammies.

The Chilli Boys extended their advantage inside the last 20 minutes through a smart finish from Appollis with the visitors caught in defence.

Home Defenders threatened to stage a comeback as the minutes to the end loomed, but the Chilli Boys held firm and collected the win as well as a quarter-final passage.

Chippa United: Nwabali, Mdunyelwa, Banda, Pietersen, Poggenpoel, Pfumbidzai, September, Kammies, Maphangule, Lebitso, Ighodaro
