Ex-Chiefs attacker Saile nets on SuperSport debut

SuperSport United booked their spot in the Nedbank Cup last 16 after beating Magesi 2-0 on Tuesday evening.

SuperSport gave former Kaizer Chiefs striker Christian Saile his debut in the line-up, with the likes of Samir Nurkovic, reserved and Terrence Dzvukamanja rested.

Magesi, meanwhile, made wholesale changes, as only John Mokone, Mzwandile Buthelezi and Kayden Rademeyer were retained from the narrow defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns.

Matsatsantsa had a perfect start as Vincent Pule gave them an early lead from a tap-in after goalkeeper Mbali Tshabalala spilled a cross in the box.

Dikwena found themselves deep in their own half for the better part of the first stanza, as Gavin Hunt's charges had an upper hand going forward.

Siviwe Magidigidi had a chance to double the lead for United ten minutes before the interval with a header that was kept out by Tshabalala.

Matsatsantsa shot-stopper Thakasani Mbanjwa did not have much to do as the visitors took a narrow lead to the half-time interval.

Hunt could not ask for a better start in the second stanza after Saile doubled the lead for SuperSport six minutes from the break with a reflex shot after his initial strike hit the bottom post after he burst through on goal.

Owen Da Gama was looking to rescue the game around the hour-mark as Deolin Mekoa replaced Ntsako Makhubela for fresh legs in attack.

However, with 22 minutes left, Hunt was already thinking of closing the game with a defensive and tactical change, as Siphesihle Ndlovu came on for Pule.

Mekoa threatened to pull a goal back for Magesi seven minutes before time with a looping shot that sailed over the crossbar.

It was a mountain to climb for the Limpopo side after that, as SuperSport cruised to the round of 16.

Confirmed line-ups:

SuperSport United: Mbanjwa, Mobbie, Ayer, Poggenpoel, Mbangossoum, Okon, Ndebele, Rapoo, Magidigi, Pule, Saile

Subs: Goss, Nkosi, Moralo, Lungu, Ndlovu, Lakay, Quaicoe, Moloisane, Nurkovic
