Gallants brush Magesi aside in Nedbank Cup

Marumo Gallants FC advanced to the Nedbank Cup round of 16 with a 3-1 victory over Motsepe Foundation Championship side Magesi FC on Tuesday evening.

Former Maritzburg United and Stellenbosch FC striker Judas Moseamedi started for the host alongside the returning Katlego Otladisa following the 2-0 win over Sekhukhune United.

Magesi weren't prepared to roll over and the experience former Baroka FC duo in goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze and Manuel Kambala started the encounter in Phokeng.

Bahlabane Ba Ntwa, though, got the ball rolling minutes to the half-hour mark when Letsie Koapeng converted a penalty-kick made it two goals inside two matches.

There was no response from the Motsepe Foundation Championship outfit and the host bagged a second goal in the last minute of the half courtesy of Moseamedi.

The misery wasn't over for the visiting team when defender Tebogo Thangwane, who didn't play over the weekend against Sekhukhune, bundled in the net seconds to the break.

Coach Clinton Larsen changed matters towards the start of the second half where he introduced Tebogo Mokalapa and removed another midfield player Donald Mokondelela.

This particular tactic from the second-tier side steered the team alive and in doing so, they pulled a goal back through the boot of Kagiso Selemela in the 57th minute.

Gallants added more personnel from the bench ahead of full-time, with Mahlatse Makudubela introduced in place of Matome Kgoetyane and Moseamedi removed for Sizwe Mdlinzo.

The runners-up from last season didn't drop their heads and wrapped up the contest to advance to the second round.
