Nedbank Cup match report Royal AM v Cape Town City 12 February 2022

Royal AM rallied from behind to defeat Cape Town City 2-1 for a place in the Nedbank Cup last 16 on Saturday afternoon.

The host started new arrivals Thabo Matlaba and Mxolisi Macuphu, while City deployed Tashreeq Morris and Khanyisa Mayo in the attack.

City took the lead on nine minutes when Mayo brought a low cross from the right under control and riffled into the top of the net minutes after Victor Letsoalo dragged an overhead kick wide.

Although, the lead was nearly cut short by the home side from a cross-cum ball on the left-side moments to the water-break but a goal-line clearance from Taariq Fielies kept City alive.

Royal AM continued to pressurise the Citizens shortly before halftime as Tebogo Potsane closed-in with a half-volley from the edge of the area following a loose ball.

Following a quiet start to the second half, the host levelled when a ball from Kabelo Mahlasela saw Relebogile Mokhuoane slot into his own net while attempting to clear.

The hosts turned the game around on 53 after a delightful free-kick outside the area from Lantshene Phalane arrowed into the top corner.

Then a nasty head collision between Morris and Thato Lingwati had the latter stretched off and replaced by Wandile Mabuza whilst Letsoalo worked a chance from a one-two at the other end.

It was a lively final minutes from the Citizens and AM showed, with chances going either way, but it was the host that emerged victorious in the end.
