Galaxy brush Amavarara aside in Nedbank Cup

TS Galaxy earned a spot in the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup after defeating Amavarara FC 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Galaxy missed defender Marks Munyai due to suspension, but goalkeeper Wensten Van der Linde, Vuyo Mere and a first start for new boy Medina Rodriguez highlighted their line-up.

The Rockets, who dumped the record holders of this cup Kaizer Chiefs out in the first round last season, were high in confidence following a two-match unbeaten run.

However, Galaxy were then eliminated in the second round by Baroka FC in last season's edition on post-match penalties whereas Amavarara didn't participate.

After a quiet opening, Galaxy hit the front in the last five minutes before halftime courtesy of hard-man Sphiwe Mahlangu with a decent finish.

The Rockets made it two on the brink of halftime when Mahlangu switched roles and set-up Masilake Phohlongo to go on and find the back of the net.

Amavarara introduced a double change at the resumption in Sihle Maso and Thandolwethu Dayimane in an effort to change the overall complex of the encounter.

The ABC Motsepe League side didn't stage a comeback despite the additions from the substitutes bench and therefore the Rockets maintained their decent tally.

Galaxy, though, weren't able to add onto their advantage but had done enough to secure the win as well as a spot in the round of 16 of the Nedbank Cup.

Confirmed line-ups:

TS Galaxy: Van der Linde, Mere, Msimango, Sanoka, M.Mahlangu, Mlambo, Phohlongo, Hlongwane, Sebelebele, Medina Rodriguez, S.Mahlangu.

Subs: Kolak, Mongae, Parker, Mbunjana, Mathekgane, Nyama, Traore, Radebe, Seema
