PSL ref clears confusion on Chiefs winning goal

After a controversial stoppage-time goal by Kaizer Chiefs against Stellenbosch FC in the Nedbank Cup that has gone on to 'break the internet', a current PSL referee has offered his perspective.

Chiefs booked their spot in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals with a 3-1 win over Stellies on Saturday.

However, there was controversy emanating from a goal scored by Pule Mmodi to make it 2-1 in stoppage time.

The Winelands outfit felt goalkeeper Sage Stephens was fouled by George Matlou with the Soweto giants accused of reaping benefits from the incident, after Mmodi tapped the ball into the net.

Stephens seemed to have lost his footing and fallen in the goalmouth scramble.

More baffling is that referee Sikhumbuzo Gasa pointed to the centre circle, signalling a goal but rushed to the assistant referee, who had his flag raised, to consult.

Amidst the confusion, KickOff.com spoke to a current PSL referee, who commented on the incident on condition of anonymity, for his learned opinion.

"So, in terms of Law 12, the following considerations must be asked," said the referee.

"One, was the goalkeeper challenged for the ball fairly? From the clip I saw, I would say no. Matlou made no attempt to play the ball and impeded the goalkeeper. A restart should have (been called) and a direct free kick awarded to Stellies."

However, the referee also indicated that the assistant referee in that situation could have flagged for offside, which Gasa could have correctly overruled.

"Two, Mmodi wasn't offside as the ball is played by a Stellies player onto a Stellies player. In terms of law, it must be played by a teammate to be offside.

"So, for me, if the assistant referee flagged for offside, the referee was correct by overruling the assistant referee because I don't think the assistant referee saw who last played the ball."

However, the insider ref believes Gasa was incorrect to overrule his assistant if he believed the challenge on Stephens by Matlou was not a foul.

"But personally, if the assistant referee flagged for the foul on the goalkeeper, there's no way the referee could have overturned his decision as I think the referee was unsighted.

"Unless the referee said: 'I saw the contact and deemed it to be fair', then the referee was incorrect in his interpretation of the law," added the official.

Amakhosi will face the winner between Mamelodi Sundowns and Sekhukhune United in the semi-finals.
