Rulani Mokwena: Best tactical performance of the season

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rhulani Mokwena says the win over Royal AM in the Nedbank Cup was their best "tactical performance" of the season.

Sundowns booked their spot in the final of the Nedbank Cup after edging Thwihli Thwahla 2-1 thanks to goals by Aubrey Modiba and Pavol Safranko.

Thabo Matlaba scored the equaliser for Royal AM in between but an error in the latter stages by goalkeeper Hugo Nyame led to Safranko netting the winner.

"On two parts, one a very spirited fight from the opposition, I think Royal AM have had a very good season. John Maduka and his technical team have very good job," Mokwena said on SuperSportTV.

"But two, huge kudos to our team. We knew we had to battle today, we had to fight and grind and play with a lot of grit and tenacity and we did that.

"We played the way the game was supposed to be played because the pitch was not very good and they were fresher. They ran, they closed us down, they chased us all over the pitch and forced us into a lot of mistakes.

"But I think tactically we were excellent today, probably the best tactical performance of the season."

When asked about Sundowns' growing injury list, he added, "Not worried, we don't complain, I don't know of a game we've gone into and we had everybody available, we have not," he continued.

"And that's what highlights the magnificent work these group of players have put this season, no winging, no whining, playing different positions different times.

"I mean Divine today had to play left centre-back, Lyle [Lakay] had to come in and play left wing and so we go. It's just incredible what this group of players do and I don't think we give them enough credit but they are magnificent.

"I call them honest and that's what you see today, a very honest output today and a well deserved place in the final."
