The Western Cape ABC Motsepe League side, who currently sit second in their standings but just three points behind Ace FC with two games in hand, were drawn against fellow ABC Motespe team Orbit College for this weekend’s Nedbank Cup Last 32 clash.
Steenberg faced off against PSL club Platinum Stars two years ago, the last time they were in the competition, and despite being drawn against a fellow lower league team this time around, Lukhubene insists no drastic changes have been made in the build up to their cup clash.
“We have been preparing as normal, because we don’t change if we are playing Kaizer Chiefs, Platinum Stars or Orbit College,” he said. “The preparations we do for our league games is the same preparation we will have for them. We have a special programme when we are playing the top four teams in our league – we have our own session for those teams. So in a tournament like this, we go back to that programme of top four teams. So we are preparing ourselves like we are playing Aces or Magic FC.”
Lukhubene admits his young team wanted to face one of the bigger Absa Premiership teams in Saturday’s clash, but says he’s had to ensure his charges remain focused and respect the opposition they’ve been drawn against.
“In football it’s not about who we play, but as long as the boys go and play and show what they can do – Kaizer Chiefs or no Kaizer Chiefs,” he said.
“Yes, many of the young stars wanted to play Kaizer Chiefs or Mamelodi Sundowns, but are we going to allow them to go into this match with that mindset? No, we cannot have that. Every game to us is important, even if we play a small team. We’ll treat Orbit the same as we would if we were playing Kaizer Chiefs.”
