After coming through a disastrous Soweto Derby, in which they suffered a 3-1 defeat to arch-rivals Orlando Pirates, Amakhosi next entertain NFD side Stellenbosch FC in the round of 16 this weekend.
Despite being in his final few months of a three-year contract he signed at Naturena in 2015 and without any silverware to show for his tenure, Komphela insists he is unmoved by the constant pressure he has endured.
“My man, I’m wired differently. Honestly, sometimes I even get shocked by myself,” Komphela said midway through being asked how he’s managed to keep his cool for so long.
Then, after allowing the reporter to finish the question, Komphela further explained what goes through his mind.
“You know, the only time I feel pressure is when you ask a question, because your focus has to be completely different,” he continued.
“Maybe I have to be a case study; maybe go out there, conduct some research to find out, and then put me on a scan to look at my brain and check, ‘How is this guy functioning?’
“Maybe I might be abnormal, who knows? Maybe I don’t belong to the league of … Maybe I’m something that belongs to a dustbin, that doesn’t feel anything.
“Honestly, I don’t know. But, I’m saying this with utmost respect and humility, I don’t fake it. If it had been fake – you can’t fake it so many times for three years – under such pressure, you must be the master of fake.
“I’m genuine, maybe it’s understanding where I am. If you are at Chiefs and you can’t stand this, you won’t last.
“It’s not that I’m strong, but it’s only that I’ve accepted where I am and I’m focused on the job. The most important thing is the principle that, ‘Listen, the process is this’. If you follow the process, it has little to do with yourself.”
The match against Stellenbosch is scheduled to take place at Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday evening, with kick-off set for 20h15.
