Chiefs are set to host Golden Arrows in a Last 32 tie at the FNB Stadium on Sunday afternoon (15h30).
This could be Komphela’s last opportunity to turn his fortunes around at the Glamour Boys, having gone his entire tenure of two-and-a-half years without tasting any silverware.
With his contract set to come to an end in June this year, and pressure from the Amakhosi faithful continuing to mount, the fervent tactician is prepared to sacrifice himself to appease the increased demand for a trophy at the club.
“It goes back to wiring. I don’t know, maybe when I was created something went wrong, somehow. I’m going to say something very brutally honest. If it were to happen, I would accept it,” said Komphela.
“If the Almighty would come now and say to me, ‘Make a choice, my lord, that you perish and we grant the trophy to Kaizer Chiefs or you stay alive and compete for the trophy.’
“Do you know what my choice would be? ‘Take my life my Lord, let the people celebrate.’ Yes, that’s life – selflessness.”
Komphela further philosophically explained that some coaches would prefer to attain success for their own sakes, while he is out to follow “the process” of achieving greatness.
“If you’re a man of process, you should never at any given stage consider yourself; you consider the process – that’s selflessness,” he added.
“Many a people have gone through unbelievable challenges, but for their bravery in serving the process, they came through unaware.
“Many of us who look to serve ourselves, through minor hiccups, we fail to go through because we consider ourselves more, ahead of the process. That’s something else. You can drag it anyhow you want, but it still fits.”
