Chiefs legend: Mofokeng can be the best in the country

Kaizer Chiefs legend Mandla Masango has explained why he believes Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana youngster Relebohile Mofokeng will blossom into the best player in the country, or at least among the best.

Mofokeng came on as a second half substitute against South Sudan on Tuesday afternoon as Bafana defeated the home side 3-2 in a 2025 AFCON qualifier clash.

It was a third appearance of international action for the 19-year-old, who made his first senior national team cap in July against Zimbabwe.

For those who have been following the teenager's progress, his meteoric rise has been no surprise. In fact, Masango had questioned why Mofokeng was not included in Bafana's AFCON squad in January.

Speaking to journalists at the Prince Mangosuthu Legacy Cup in Ulundi, where 'Mzimba Shaker' was part of a star-studded squad of Kaizer Chiefs legends that took on KZN legends, the former Chiefs winger believes Mofokeng has what it takes to reach the pinnacle of South African football and beyond.

"I think the sky is the limit for Rele [Mofokeng], I like the fact that he's very humble and he gets down to business and is direct," said Masango.

"I think His game has improved in terms of stats. If you can check the games he plays, he assists, he scores and every time he has the ball, you can see there's something that might happen.

"So, I wish him all the best. Hence, I said last time that he should have been in the Bafana AFCON squad.

"But here he is and he's proving himself. I'm happy for him, I hope he stays this way. I hope this is his last season locally and he goes overseas," he added.

"I think he's grounded because he comes from the football background. His father used to play before, so that's one thing that will make him stay grounded, as well as his hard work.

"From what I hear,  he still lives in the clubhouse. So, that on its own indicates that he wants to succeed.

"If he can stick to that and put us on the map. I feel he's going be one of the best if not the best in the country."
