Confirmed: Pirates to play 2022/23 UEFA Europa League winners

Following what has been a successful season, Orlando Pirates are set for a high-profile pre-season friendly match against a Spanish La Liga side, it has been revealed.

The Buccaneers' 2023/24 campaign that brought with it the MTN8, Nedbank Cup and a second-placed finish came on the back of a pre-season that was largely spent in Spain, the home country of head coach Jose Riveiro.

Based in Marbella from July 9 to July 21 last year, this is where they got to face the likes of Maccabi Tel Aviv from Israel, Independiente de Valle from Ecuador, and UD Las Palmas who had just won promotion to LaLiga.

With head coach Riveiro having promised that next season will be even better for Pirates, it seems the club are going the same route ahead of the next campaign, testing their abilities against Spanish opposition.

On Thursday, Sevilla announced on their official social media pages that they will be doing battle with the South African giants on 15 July at Estadio Jesus Navas.

The side had a challenging season last term, finishing 14th in the 20-team league after occupying the relegation spots at one stage, and will be looking to do much better come 2024/25.

It starts with pre-season, where Bucs are expected to provide a different challenge being from a different country, league and continent.

If the profile of opposition was in doubt for Pirates, Sevilla won the UEFA Europa League as recently as the 2022/23 season.

The Soweto outfit, however, are yet to release their full itinerary for pre-season, though it can be expected they will be playing more opposition while out in Spain.

Sevilla's star attraction Sergio Ramos could have left by the time the Buccaneers travel to the European country as he has his contract coming up for renewal and has been linked with a move away.
