Ex-Chiefs coach: Makaringe’s Pirates exit does not make sense

Former coach Sergio Dos Santos says Orlando Pirates' decision to release fan-favourite Fortune Makaringe does not make sense.

Makaringe was released by the Buccaneers on Tuesday and is said to have already found suitors.

The 31-year-old attacking midfielder finished the season with only one goal and one assist.

The former Kaizer Chiefs coach believes Makaringe is still good enough to play for any team in the DStv Premiership.

"Why would a club like Pirates release a player like that? It's telling me something," Santos tells KickOff.

"Maybe he hasn't behaved himself, maybe he has done something wrong. Maybe he is not as committed to the team as he should be. Maybe he's got personal problems.

"There should be something, there is no reason a club can just release such a top player.

"It doesn't make sense. There must be something bigger than that. That's what I think.

"At the earlier stages of the season he was involved, the team that is playing at Pirates at the moment is different from the one that was playing three months ago. There's a lot of new faces there.

"He is experienced, he is the type of player that is good enough, so why should they let him go? It doesn't make sense.

"He is a good consistent player, so why would they suddenly release him? Maybe they believe they already have something better than what he's got.

"If the decision was made for the right reasons, then it's a good decision. He's got the ability to play in many teams.

"Pirates finished very strongly, they've put together a very good team, so probably they feel it's better to let him go."
