'Gilberto is not good enough'

Former footballer and current analyst Junior Khanye has made no secret of the fact he is not impressed with Gilberto's start to life at Orlando Pirates.

The Angolan winger, who has already won his first trophy with the Buccaneers, in the form of MTN8, is yet to set the scene alight in South Africa, promising signs and all.

Though the 23-year-old can play both as a left- and right-winger, he has struggled to win a place in head coach Jose Riveiro's starting line-up.

In the five matches he has played in all competitions thus far, he has not scored or made an assist.

"At the moment, even though he is an international player, he has not done better than Relebohile Mofokeng. I'm sure if you were to do proper scouting and proper research in signing a player, you would do better than what Pirates did with Gilberto," shares Khanye, speaking to KickOff.

"I'm sure Pirates paid a lot of signing-on fees for Gilberto and also the salary he receives every month [must be a lot].

"Remember, Pirates have a Mofokeng that is 19 years old, who is a South African. So, where is Gilberto going to play?

"In South Africa as a whole, [Lucas] Ribeiro [Costa] from [Mamelodi] Sundowns is the only player that can put Mofokeng on the bench. This shows in South Africa we've got better players, only if we did proper scouting.

"As for Gilberto, I don't think there's a coach who would put on the bench a good international player, so for him to sit on the bench at Pirates it says a lot about him," says the outspoken ex-winger.

Furthermore, Khanye is of the opinion that if Bucs' R11 million signing was good enough, the coach was going to use him either on the right or left.

"I'm sorry to say this, but Gilberto is not good enough.

"Watching him starting a match or coming on as a sub, so far he has done nothing.

"Oswin Appolis could have made a far better signing than Gilberto. The boy has improved.

"There are better boys than Gilberto at the School Of Excellence, boys who are talented like Mofokeng. That's if they were looking for young, exciting players."

Gilberto is fresh off international duty with Angola, where they won back-to-back AFCON qualifiers against Niger, and will be eager to prove his critics wrong as the Soweto giants meet Magesi FC in the Carling Knockout at Orlando Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
